Icon of Saint Demetrius from the Holy Monastery of Agathonos

Description

A unique icon of Saint Demetrius is dedicated to the Holy Monastery of Agathonos. Straddling the line between Western and folk art, it depicts Saint Demetrius atop a red horse, in accordance with the well-known iconographic tradition. The horse is rearing on its hind legs and appears ready to leap. The saint wears a military uniform in green, pink, and gold and holds his spear with the tip pointing downward, striking the fallen legionnaire who is doubled over beside his own fallen horse. The saint’s cloak billows backward as if he were soaring through the air, somewhat reminiscent of the Komnenian style but with more linear features. In the background is a walled city with colorful houses, most likely Thessaloniki, where the saint was imprisoned. The entire scene is crowned on the left by an angel, who is offering the saint the martyr’s wreath. At the bottom left is the inscription: “Dimitrios, guardian of the entire city, Aniana, thrice-blessed Myrovlyta.”
