Simeon Voliotis
He was born in Kozani in 1977, with roots in Asprogeia, Florina (a descendant of Macedonian freedom fighters) and Kastoria.He graduated from the Law School (1999) and the School of Theology (2002) at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He holds a master’s degree in Canon Law.He became a monk in 2002 in Kastoria. He was ordained a deacon in 2011 and a priest in 2011. He served as Protosyngellos of the Holy Archdiocese of Athens, and in 2018 he was elected Bishop of Thespia.He was triumphantly elected Metropolitan of Fthiotida on October 11, 2019. He is known for his strong outgoing nature, his support for youth, and the modern social structures he has established in the region.
Nikolaos Protopapas
He was born in Platia, Tinos, in 1948.A lover of literature, he studied at the Rizarios Ecclesiastical School and the Theological School of Athens (graduating in 1972).He became a monk in 1972 in Euboea, a deacon in 1973, and a priest in 1975. He served as a professor on Tinos, a preacher at the Panhellenic Holy Foundation of the Annunciation on Tinos, and a parish priest in Athens. He also served as Director of the Radio Station of the Church of Greece (1990–1996).He was elected Metropolitan in 1996. He completely renovated the Spiritual Administrative Center, founded the Metropolis’s Radio Station and the retirement home, and authored numerous theological and historical books. He passed away suddenly from a heart attack on July 27, 2019.
Damascenos Papachristou
Born Nikolaos Papachristou, he was born in Dorvitsa, Nafpaktos, in 1914.He studied at the School of Theology of the University of Athens.He served as a military chaplain during World War II and the Greek Civil War, rendering significant service. He was elected Metropolitan of Fthiotida in 1960.He led the local Church for 36 full years. He became known for his extensive charitable work, including the establishment of student dormitories and summer camps, as well as his support for the needy in Lamia. He resigned due to old age and passed away on May 22, 1996.
Ambrose Nikolaidis
Aristotelis Nikolaidis, as he was known, was born in Prusa, Asia Minor, in 1880.He graduated with honors from the historic Theological School of Halki in 1904.He served as Protosyngellos in Serres during the Macedonian Struggle. Due to his intense patriotic activities, he was sentenced to death twice by the Young Turks in 1911 and was persecuted by the Bulgarians.He was elected Metropolitan of Nafpaktos in 1914 and transferred to Fthiotida in 1932. He shepherded the region during the difficult period of the Occupation and the Civil War, protecting the population from the hardships of war. He retired from active ministry in 1958 and passed away that same year.
James II (Papaioannou)
He was born in Dimitsana (1860) and studied theology in Athens. He served as chaplain to the Royal Court (1882) and as secretary of the Holy Synod.He was consecrated Bishop of Fthiotida on July 25, 1914. In 1922, when the bishoprics were elevated to metropolises, he received the title of Metropolitan.He resigned on September 6, 1932, for health reasons and passed away in Athens on May 20, 1933.
Theophilos Ioannou
He was elected and consecrated Bishop of Fthiotida on October 21, 1906. He was a learned clergyman, and his ministry coincided with the outbreak of the Balkan Wars (1912–1913), during which he offered spiritual support to the local population at this historic turning point. He passed away while still in office on September 3, 1913, paving the way for his succession by Iakovos Papaioannou the following year.
Konstantinos Kalozimis
He assumed his duties as Archbishop of Fthiotida on October 16, 1894. His tenure as archbishop coincided with the difficult Greco-Turkish War of 1897, during which the region of Fthiotida found itself on the front lines of the conflict. He remained in office until his death on January 31, 1902.
Note: In the interval between the death of Kallinikos (1877) and the election of Constantine (1894), there was a long period of vacancy on the throne, due to the political and ecclesiastical conditions of the time and the implementation of the law on the merger of dioceses.
Kallinikos Kastorchis
He was born in Dimitsana (1789), studied under Konstantinos Oikonomos, and served as a clergyman and fighter during the Revolution of 1821.He was consecrated Archbishop of Fthiotida on October 3, 1852. In 1871, he participated in the transfer of the sacred relics of the National Martyr Patriarch Gregory V. He passed away in Athens on August 13, 1877.
James I of Euripus (Mitropoulos)
He was ordained Bishop of Charioupolis (1824) and in 1827 was elected Metropolitan of Euripus. On November 21, 1833, he became the first Metropolitan to head the newly established Diocese of Fthiotida.In 1841, the abolished Diocese of Phocis was incorporated into his province. He served as a member of the Holy Synod and passed away in Athens on February 20, 1851.
