Holy Monastery of Profitis Ilias in Zeli

The Holy Monastery of Prophet Elias, at the site “Karkari” of Zeli, is located about 11 km from the settlement of Zeli, in the Municipality of Amfikleia-Elateia, and consists of the catholicon and a complex of cells. The catholicon was originally a three-aisled basilica, but in its present form it is a single-chamber, barrel-vaulted church, decorated with wall paintings of the late 18th century. The cells are arranged around the central courtyard in two-storey buildings with wooden balustrades on the balconies. The monastery was most likely built during the period of Frankish rule, as suggested by its fortress-like exterior, the blocked arched openings on the side walls of the catholicon, and the blocked pointed arches on other monastery buildings. It underwent extensive alterations during the Ottoman period.
